Cyberbullying: How to Help Protect Youth

Bullying can have devastating consequences, and unfortunately, the rise of social media has created additional and more anonymous ways for victims to be targeted.

Cyberbullying is easier to do and more insidious than traditional bullying because it can take place 24 hours a day and without face-to-face contact with the victim. It takes many forms, including name-calling, spreading rumors, posting embarrassing photos or videos, or sexually harassing someone online. The RCMP defines it as using communication technologies – like social networking sites, email, texting, websites and instant messaging – to intimidate or harass others.

Tips to Stop It

Take action against cyberbullying by speaking up. The aggressor should be asked to stop, without responding heatedly or in retaliation. Bullies often do it to get a reaction, which can give them a feeling of power. If the child or teen isn’t comfortable asking them to stop, a parent or teacher can step in.
